About the Experience
Discover one of Mauritius’ oldest living crafts through the art of vacoa weaving. This hands-on workshop introduces you to a tradition rooted in daily island life, where utility and beauty meet.
Vacoa leaves from the Pandanus utilis plant were once used for shelter, storage, and survival. Today, they continue to carry the stories of the island and the people who shaped it. In this workshop, you will follow the journey of the leaf from plant to finished object, guided by artisans who have preserved this knowledge for generations.
The Story of the Vacoa Plant: Learn about the history of the vacoa plant and its role in Mauritian culture. From its growth to its harvest, every step reflects a deep connection between people and land.
From Leaf to Material: Understand how the leaves are cut, dried, and prepared before weaving begins. Feeling the texture of the material helps you appreciate the care behind each finished piece.
Traditional Weaving Techniques: Practice time honored methods used to create baskets and everyday objects. The process is meditative, precise, and deeply satisfying.
Your Handmade Souvenir: Create your own vacoa item during the workshop. This is not just a souvenir, but a tangible memory shaped by your own hands.
Stories and Human Connection: Listen to personal stories shared by local artisans as they pass on ancestral knowledge. This exchange adds depth and meaning to the experience.
Private and Focused Experience: Bookings are kept private to ensure individual attention and a relaxed learning environment.
